Odd stamps : 06 q Stamps on cotton / silk

In 2017, Hong Kong emitted a set of 6 stamps, dedicated to fashion of the 1920's to the 1970's.
The stamps came as single stamps, but also as a sheet, with 3 of each.

For this post however, I need to show the two addional values of this set.

The first one, a $10 stamp was issued on an another miniature sheet, holding only that one stamp.

Here we see a lady, and the stamp is in the shape of a dress.

Finally, also a $20 stamp was issued, again in a souvenir sheet, but this time, the issue is emitted on silk. The shape and design are identical to the $10 stamp, but with a silver, glowing image.

Odd stamps : 06 p Stamps on cotton / silk

Once again, a new smooth stamp/sheetlet from Thailand.
Depicting two pets, a dog with a cat on his back, and printed on velvet paper.
Touching the stamp/sheetlet, it feels like petting the animals for real.

This sheetlet of 25 baht, is only issued on 300,000 copies. A rather small number for a country with almost 70 million people (2024).
It was issued on February 2024 to commemorate the 'Love your pet - day'.
The stamp was printed on velvet paper, to promote philately.

In the bottom corner of the sheetlet, we see a qr-code which leads to the website of the Thai post.
For those who don't speak phasa Thai (Thai), the site is also available in phasa Ankrit (English):

Odd stamps : 06 m Stamps on cotton / silk

Some time ago, I posted a stamp on silk, that was issued in 2012 :
https://rainbowstampsandcoins.blogspot.com/2013/02/odd-stamps-06-g-stamps-on-cotton.html

It is part of a 12 year project on chinese zodiac signs.
This week, I had the opportunity to buy another sheetlet from this series. The sheetlets are issued by the Hong Kong postal authorities, and are similar in style and colours.

The sheetlet, printed on silk was issued in 2014 to celebrate the year of the Horse.

Odd stamps : 06 l Stamps on cotton / silk

Stamps on silk are always something special.
For my next item this is surely true.
Liechtenstein, the mini state between Switzerland and Austria has a long tradition among (European) stamp collectors, as they emit high quality stamps.

The sheet of 2013, was emitted to commemorate the renovated 'city palace' of the Liechtenstein princely familly in Vienna, Austria. Together with the 'garden palace', it is owned by the princely family for over 300 years.
Liechtenstein City Palace - Vienna Austria
After it was fully renovated, both palaces are open to the public.
The overwhelming baroque style of the building, and the neo-rococo interiors are reflected in the sheetlet, issued by the Liechtenstein post.
The sheet is composed of 3 stamps, but the design runs throughout the sheetlet.
Only the 3 stamps are in full colour, with gold overprint, the board outside the stamps are in pink.

On the back side of the stamps, we see and feel the embossed printing.
The silk structure makes it feels as if one was touching the wallpaper in the grand rooms of the palace.

Truly a wonderful sheet to have in your collection. And an invitation to visit the palace in Vienna.
The sheet was issued for the reopening to the public of the city palace, and can be visited twice a month on Fridays (€ 25),  or even rented!
One hall (or should I say 'saloon' or 'parlour' can be rented from € 5500 on...)
I'll stick to the sheetlet, and dream away...

Odd stamps : 06 j Stamps on cotton / silk

Canada is said to be the only country in the world that everyone wants to visit.
From the Norsemen in the 10th century over the French and British colonies in the 15th century, Canada has always been in the interest of many people.
Except for the border with the United States, which is the world's longest land border, Canada has no other neighbouring countries.
It is the second-largest country by area, and the fourth-largest country by land in the world.

But is it a country?
Before I get e-mails and letters from 36 million people in Canada, (don't worry, I speak both English and French), the question is not that odd.
Canada is a sovereign state, but with no president. Technically spoken, it is a constitutional monarchy under the British trone. Not only is the Queen represented on all Canadian banknotes, also the royal anthem is still 'God save the Queen' and the Union Jack (flag of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Norhtern Ireland) is still the Canadian Royal Union Flag...

De facto however, Canada is as sovereign as most other countries in the world.
Despite of the die-hard royalist, most Canadians consider themselves as idependent from their European motherland.

The flag and the anthem issue are solved as well.
The anthem "O, Canada" - although composed in 1880 - was adopted in 1980. It is used as national athem on official occasions.
The flag is a different story...
From the 19th century on, the Union Jack was present in the corner of the flag of Canada,
Flag of Canada 1868 - 1921
In the renewed design of 1921, the flag did not change much.
Flag of Canada 1921 - 1957
The Maple Leaf (symbol of Canada) is in green - and the Union Jack is in the corner.
In 1957 a small change was made in the design of 1921.
Flag of Canada 1957 - 1965
This minor modification, show the Maple Leaf in red. also the harp (Norhtern Ireland) is modernised.
The flag was only in use for a couple of years.

Finally, in 1964, a competition was held, to make a design for a new Canadian flag.
One of the designs that didn't win, showed the original colours of the Union Jack (blue, white and red) and the Maple Leaf, as it appeared on the previous flags.
1964 design : the Pearson Pennant
The winner of the competition, Colonel George F.G. Stanley had this similar flag, in only red and white. The flag is know as the Maple Leaf.
George F. G. Stanley 1907 - 2002 and his wife

Flag of Canada 1965 -
In 2015, Canada celebrated the 50th anniversary of its own flag, with a souvenir sheet, printed on silk. The image of the Maple Leaf therefore feels like a real flag.
Souvenir sheet of Canada 2015
The actual stamp is the flag itself (although hard to see) is self-adhesive.

The arrows shows where the perforation of the stamp is most visible.

Once more, Canada has issued a beautiful stamp which I thankfully add to my collection of odd stamps.

Odd stamps : 06 i Stamps on cotton / silk

For my next item, we go to Taiwan.
Officially, Taiwan is a province of the People's Republic of China.
Many Taiwanese people consider themselves however as being citizens of the 'independent' island of Taiwan, or the so called Republic of China.

Map of PR China, Taiwan (R.O.C. in red)
For any political interpretation, you'll have to search elsewhere, here I'm only talking about the beauty of the stamps, issued by this country.

And this truly is a beautiful stamp/sheet!

Most stamps/sheets printed on silk are already an example of exquisit printing.
Here, the stamp is superb.

silk sheet / stamp of Taiwan
If we look in detail, we see a beautiful bird, printed in embossed silk, with gold overprint.
To see the embossed printing, a picture of the back side shows us more :

back side of the sheet, bird and chinese characters are embossed
On the border of the sheet, we see some fibers hanging loosly.

loose fibers
If we zoom in into the stamp, we'll discover the fine design and embossed printing, together with the gold print on the back ofhte bird.

This sheet is truly a piece of art and as far as I'm concerned, to be nominated for the most beautiful stamp of the year.

If any Taiwanese reader of my blog, is willing to send me a postally used copy of this sheet, I'd be very happy.

Odd stamps : 06 h Stamps on cotton / silk

The number of odd stamps that were issued in the last months, and those who are about to be emitted in the near future is enormous.

I'm trying to keep up with all new issues, and I also try to buy them, so that I can present it on this blog.
The item of today is again a very special issue.

This stamp was issued to celebrate the year of the Dragon (2012).
It is printed on 100% silk.

It is also printed on gummed paper, so it's not an auto-adhesive stamp.
It was issued by the Hong Kong, China authorities and is a truly beautiful stamp.

Along with the sheet, a certificate of authenticy was given to each buyer.
I got mine as well of course.

I'm looking forward on receiving such a stamp (sheet) on a postally used letter.
I do hope to get such a copy one day.

Odd stamps : 06 e Stamps on cotton / silk

Thailand, once more.
I can't get enough of the beauty of Thai stamps.
This time, a special edition in the series of 'stamps on cotton'.
Altough, this is not really a stamp made out of, or printed on cotton.
It's thai silk!

The stamp came in a set of 4 and a sheetlet with one of the 4 stamps (25 baht) on.

Full sheetlet with one 25 baht stamp - sold for 60 baht

detail - silk oval with peacock in goldprint

In order to add more value to the stamp collection, postage stamp sheets have been made into two types. The first type features a peacock embroidered with brown silk thread on the golden silk material; the second type presents a peacock embossed on golden foil, on a white silk material. This is the first time that this innovation has been used in an issue of postage stamps. This stampset's issue date: 04.Aug.2010.

About 20,000 stamps had been produced, consuming nearly 5,500 meters of silk!

Odd stamps : 06 a Stamps on cotton /silk

France is the next country to be added to the list of countries who have issued 'odd' stamps.
This year, 2011, the french postal services 'la Poste' issued a booklet of 12 stamps, printed on cotton paper.
They are used for letters within France, up to 20 g.
All stamps depict an item related to protection of nature, or recycling. The 12 stamps are only emitted in a booklet of 12 different auto adhesive stamps.

For all collectors of France,  you will have noticed lately the change in text at the bottom of the french stamps.
As they are printed by 'Phil@poste' you will notice this name at the bottom of each stamp.
You will see the Greek φ (phi) in the corner of stamps (not in this issue however).
As φ is the abbreviation of 'phi'l@poste.
Some stamps by the way were printed in two different ways, just check the bottom of the french stamps next time.
